Composition
Each tablet contains:
EPICOCILLIN Capsules
Each capsule contains:
Ampicillin trihydrate equivalent to 250 or 500 mg Ampicillin activity.
EPICOCILLIN Suspension
Each 5 ml after reconstitution contains:
Ampicillin trihydrate equivalent to 125 or 250 mg Ampicillin activity.
EPICOCILLIN Vials
Each vial contains:
Ampicillin soduim equivalent to 250 or 500 mg or 1 g Ampicillin activity.

Properties and Mode of Action
EPICOCILLIN is a semi-synthetic penicillin with a broad spectrum bactericidal activity against both G+ve and G-ve organisms extended to include Haemolytic streptococci,Streptococcus faecalis,Streptococcus pneumoniae, Listeria monocytogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, E.coli, N.gonorrhoeae, N.meningitidis, Bordetella pertussis, Proteus mirabilis,Brucella spp., Salmonellae and some Shigellae.
EPICOCILLIN is stable in the acid gastric secretion and is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.It is excreted in high concentrations in the bile; thus being effectively used in the biliary tract infections including typhoid carriers.

Indications
Upper respiratory tract infections: otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, septic sore throat, pharyngitis.
Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, pneumonia.
Gastrointestinal and biliary tract infections: enteritis, bacillary dysentery, typhoid and paratyphoid, cholecystitis.
Genitourinary tract infections: cystitis, pyelonephritis, gonorrhoea, urethritis, adnexitis.
Other infections: septicemia, bacterial meningitis, endocarditis and soft tissue infections.

Dosage and Administration
Oral doses are better given 30 - 60 minutes before meals.
Oral Use:
Capsules:
250 - 1000 mg every 6 hours depending upon the severity of the condition.
Suspension:
125 - 500 mg every 6 hours or as prescribed by the physician.

Parenteral Use:
Adults:

500 mg every 4 - 6 hours I.M. or slowly I.V. over 3 - 5 minutes or by infusion.
For serious infections: 150 - 300 mg/kg daily in divided doses I.V..
Children:
100 - 200 mg/kg/day I.M. or I.V. divided every 6 hours.
In Meningitis: 200 - 400 mg/kg/day divided every 4 - 6 hours.

Precautions
Reduced doses may be required in patients with impaired renal function.
EPICOCILLIN should be avoided in infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus infections and lymphocytic leukemias because of the increased risk of rash.

Contra_indications
EPICOCILLIN is contraindicated in patients known to be sensitive to penicillin.

Side effects
As with other penicillins, side effects are usually infrequent, mild and transient including skin rash especially those with infectious mononucleosis, and diarrhoea.
Raised serum aminotransferase concentrations have occasionally been reported.
Super-infection with Candida have occasionally occurred.

Presentation
EPICOCILLIN 250 mg Capsules : Box of 2 blisters of 6 capsules each.
EPICOCILLIN 500 mg Capsules : Box of 2 blisters of 8 capsules each.
EPICOCILLIN 125 mg Dry Mix :
Bottle of 100 ml suspension after reconstitution with "EIPICO" solvent.
EPICOCILLIN 250 mg Dry Mix :
Bottle of 100 ml suspension after reconstitution with "EIPICO" solvent.
EPICOCILLIN 250 mg Vials : Box of 1 vial.
EPICOCILLIN 500 mg Vials : Box of 1 vial.
EPICOCILLIN 1 g Vials : Box of 1 vial.
